The challenge

Every ESG answer needs an owner, evidence and a link to the standard it reports against.

ESG reporting asks a company to collect a large amount of information about its environmental, social and governance performance. The information comes from many business units, subsidiaries and facilities, and each answer needs an owner, supporting evidence and a clear link to the regulations and standards being reported against.

Beyond the data, the company has to understand which topics are material, track risks and the controls for them, set targets, learn from best practice and report to the standards it has chosen. When this work is spread over spreadsheets and email, it is hard to assign, track and trust.

The client needed one platform where a company could set itself up, assign data collection to the right people, analyse its position and prepare reports, with a separate administrator panel to onboard and manage client companies.

What we built

Catabatic built an ESG compliance platform with two panels: an admin panel to onboard clients and manage content and access, and a client panel where each company collects data, analyses it and reports.

Admin panel

Onboard and manage client companies.

  • Content sync

Masters, product masters, mapped standards and questions, regulations and standards, reporting translation tables and grids are synced into the application from the central source.

  • Client onboarding

Add a client with its company details, subsidiaries, facilities, business functions, reporting preferences, products and services, roles and users.

  • Client list

View all clients and edit a company's details.

  • Users and roles

View, add and edit users and roles. Role menu mapping gives each role its access rights.

Client panel: setup and data collection

Set up the company, assign work and collect answers.

  • Company setup

Company details, incorporation, ownership demographics, financials, sales footprint, subsidiaries, facilities, business functions, materiality and reporting preferences. Each can be viewed and edited.

  • Work assignment

See all questions for each business unit and ESG topic, and assign questions to the right users.

  • Enter data

Questions appear as cards by ESG topic. Users answer assigned questions, attach files as evidence, view metric details and see their tasks.

  • Emissions

A summary of all emissions added, and logs to add and view emission entries.

Client panel: analysis

Materiality, risks, targets, best practice and capability gaps.

  • Materiality

    View the materiality details.

  • Opportunities and risks

View the risk cards synced into the application, add custom risks, and see the summary and history of each. Update a risk, and add controls to one that is still uncontrolled.

  • Targets

View the target cards, add custom targets, and add milestones to a target while seeing the earlier answer details.

  • Best practice

View the best practices synced into the application, explore one and activate it.

  • Capability gap

A report of the total capability gap, with the material capability gaps.

Client panel: reporting and settings

Reports, the company's own data, access and profile.

  • Regulations and standards

Lists based on the standards selected, with a detail view and a learn more option for the synced document.

  • Customised reports

View all created reports and create a custom report from a pop-up.

  • Your data

Lists of metrics, capabilities, risks, controls, targets, and products and services.

  • Settings and profile

Access control with roles, users, emission breakdown categories to enable, and the user's own profile and password.

How it works day to day

  1. 1

    Onboard

The administrator syncs the content, adds the client company with its subsidiaries, facilities, business functions, products and services, and creates roles and users with access rights.

  2. 2

    Set up the company

The client completes company details, incorporation, ownership, financials, sales footprint, materiality and reporting preferences.

  3. 3

    Assign work

Questions are grouped by business unit and ESG topic and assigned to the right users.

  4. 4

    Collect data

Users answer their questions, attach evidence and record emissions. Tasks show what is still pending.

  5. 5

    Analyse

The company reviews materiality, manages risks and controls, sets targets with milestones, activates best practices and checks its capability gaps.

  6. 6

    Report

The company views its position against the selected regulations and standards, and creates custom reports from its data.

In use

  • Who uses it

Administrators, who onboard and manage client companies. Client teams, who set up, enter data, analyse and report, with roles and access rights for each user.

  • Technology

Built on .NET with an SQL database.

  • What is managed

Company profiles, questions and answers with evidence, emissions, risks and controls, targets, best practices, capability gaps and reports.
